I picked up this book because it was reccomended to me by a friend, and I went into it thinking it was going to be something along the lines of fanfiction. it was a GREAT book! The setting seems to be the future, with a re-emergence of magic, yet despite the fantastical-sounding premise the story focuses on very mundane aspects of the world, namely the Securemarket. This makes for a very interesting read, the characters are so believeable you'd think you could meet them in your local grocery store.I'd reccomend this for anyone who's into the Sci-Fi genre, or anyone who likes the work of Joss Whedon, as the story has the same organic feel as Firefly, and the same witty humor.

I read this book in three main "sittings," all in transit. That said, it made for a most-excellent way to pass the time; plane, train, or otherwise. (And I found myself peering at the supermarket staff tonight when I stopped in on the way home.) I really enjoyed Sandel's setting, and found it useful to read the glossary at the back before starting the book, as a whole. The interaction between magic and technology in the world of the Securemarket(tm) makes for an interesting place, and the characters Sandel has created are believably "real" folks. Without revealing any spoilers, I found the end of the story to be very satisfying, both in terms of plot, and stylistically. Sandel is an adept storyteller, and "Tales From the Securemarket(tm)" was a fun read. I really enjoyed it. I usually stay as far from anything science-fiction-like as I possibly can, and was lured in the direction of "Securemarket(tm)" by a friend's recommendation; for me there was enough of a balance between SF and fantasy-- and the intrigue of the Corporation culture-- that my aversion to the genre suspended itself, and had me coasting along, wondering what would happen next. (For folks looking for something like "Aura," the closest I've ever had in real life is Knappogue Castle's single-malt Irish whiskey-- it's what whiskey would taste like if made by the Sidhe...)
Fantastic book, with great characterization. I sincerely hope there is a sequel on the horizon. Read it, and see if you can spot all the subtle jokes woven through the text
